Past Masters Night 17/2/15

What a night we had at Weatheroak Lodge on the 17th of February on our Past Masters Night.

The Provincial Grand Master RW Bro Robert C Vaughan was accompanied by his Director of Ceremonies W Bro Bernard Callow and 24 visiting Brethren, including Brethren from our Mother Lodge Francis Davies 5035 and Grand Mother Lodge Masefield 2034, also among the visitors 6 Brethren from St Thomas Lodge 5420 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with whom we have over the years had many happy meetings in Newcastle and Kings Heath.

As Worshipful Master in 2013 I was very proud and honored to have Initiated my youngest son Richard into the Lodge, and in 2014 again as Worshipful Master I passed Richard to the degree of a fellowcraft. When the Worshipful Master Simon Pearson asked if I would like to be involved in Past Masters Night to complete Richard’s introduction to Freemasonry, how could I refuse; so along with Richards’s uncle W Bro Brian Phillips we completed the ceremony.

After our Worshipful Master returned to his rightful place, W Bro Reginald Stephens now aged 95 entered the Lodge room to rapturous applause accompanied by W Bro Francis Jephcott PSGD P.Asst PGM (Warks) and W Bro Fred Cooper P.Pov JGW. After taking their seats our Provincial Grand Master rose and gave a sort resume of Reg’s life and masonic career and presented him with his 60 year Certificate, Reg thanked to Provincial Grand Master his certificate.

The Provincial Grand Master then called forward Bro Bob Amos, appointed and invested him with immediate effect as P.Prov GStdB, in recognition of Bob’s great work in the Lodge as Charity Steward and Chief Steward.

Following the meeting we all adjourned to the dining room where we all enjoyed a good meal along with refreshments. During this time W Bro Ken Brindley proposed a toast to W Bro Reg and he responded thanking Ken for his kind words, the Provincial Grand Master and all the Brethren for attending, and said he was working on his toast to Ken when he will receive his 50th year Certificate in 2017. The WM. presented Reg with a clock from the Brethren of Weatheroak Lodge as a token of our appreciation of his 60 years’ service to Weatheroak Lodge and freemasonry in general.

At 9.30pm W Bro Reg and his guests left the dining room as the taxi had arrived to take them home, everyone stood and applauded. After the meal some of us stayed behind for a final drink or two reminiscing on what had been a truly exceptional night in the history of Weatheroak Lodge, one that will remain in our memory for many years to come. We could have stayed all night but at 11.30 we were invited to go home by W Bro Alan White as he tired and wanted to go to bed.
